Who was Mike Mattingly?
To the news cameras and the police reports, Jason Michael Mattingly Jr. was just a suspect in a high-speed chase. But to me, he was simply Mike. I didn't just know him as a name on a case file; I knew him for 10 years. I was part of his life when his children were just 2 and 10 years old. I knew his family, his kids, and even eventually built a friendship with his children's mother. I knew the human being behind the mugshot.
The reality vs. the rumors
Mike wasn't the "violent criminal" or "crazy person" social media comments made him out to be. Was he perfect? No. Like many, he struggled with a past involving drugs, and he got tangled up with toxic relationships that damaged his reputation and, ultimately, contributed to the chaos that took his life. But he was not a violent man. He was a person—someone who didn't deserve to die in a hail of gunfire on a public street.
Why I am fighting
The public is often quick to believe the first story they hear—the "official" narrative told by police spokespeople and repeated by the news. It is easier to believe that if the police shoot, it must be justified. But I have seen what the public hasn't. I have watched the body cam footage. I have read the autopsy reports that show he was shot in the back. I have seen the proof that evidence was tampered with at the scene.
